Summer sizzlers
|
|
|
Jessica Alba
Jessica's look is similar to the make-up used on the catwalk for this spring/summer.
A warm, glowing complexion has been created using a golden caramel foundation. Cheeks
are radiant with a soft gold swept high on the cheekbones. Eyebrows have been brushed
up but left natural, while terracotta eyeshadow has been blended on the contours.
The upper lashes are lined in black eyeliner and winged out slightly.
The surprise comes from a pop of colour in the lower lash line in blue, which lifts
the eye and gives a tropical feel finished off with black mascara. Lips are shaded
in a neutral colour and topped with a glistening lipgloss.

Carey Mulligan
Carey's look is very fresh and natural, in keeping with her chic, gamine hairstyle.
Her skin is evened out but not too heavily covered, allowing a clean look, while
her cheeks are coloured with a strong peachy blusher. Carey's eyebrows have been
groomed — important with short hair and a fringe — bringing attention to the eyes.
A neutral shimmer eyeshadow has then been applied on the eyelids with a stronger
colour added to the contours. A copper-gold metallic shade has been used under the
lower eyelashes with a set of false lashes finishing the look. Lips are kept simple
with a soft lipgloss. This is an easy yet sassy look to pull off, particularly if
you have youth on your side — as Carey does. Sandra's is a simple yet effective
red carpet look. Semi-matte foundation gives a smooth, well-polished complexion,
with concealer flawlessly applied to hide dark shadows or blemishes. Her eyebrows
are groomed and filled in and there's no dramatic colour anywhere except the 'wow'
lips. Sandra's eyes have been defined with a neutral eyeshadow applied over the
lids, while her upper eyelids have been lined close to the lashes above and below
the lash line for definition. Several coats of mascara have been used so her eyes
don't look washed out. A rosy blush has then been applied on the apples of the cheeks,
not to look too faded. The lips are a shade of raspberry, carefully applied with
a lip brush for control.

Natalie Portman
Natalie's bold, dramatic looks emphasises her doe-like eyes — widely considered
one of her best features. The difference is the colour: teal green instead of the
traditional smoky black.
Her skin is not too pale or bronzed, while cheeks are kept glowing with a fresh
pink blush. The lips are softly coloured with a fleshy pink lipgloss to draw attention
to the eyes. Her striking eyebrows are groomed and shaped, filled in and brushed
up. A teal eyeshadow has then been used to surround the eyelids, including the upper
and lower lash lines, and winged out for a catlike effect. This has then been blended
upward and outward. The lower inner eyes are rimmed with a teal khol pencil. The
look is finished with lashings of dramatic black mascara.

Courtney Cox
Courtney's complexion is more matte than shiny, making it flawless for the red carpet
— a look she always perfects well. Her eyes are framed with perfectly sculpted eyebrows,
while colour on the bone brow complements a lilac shade on the eyelids, blended
to the outer corner of the eye and under the lower lid. A frosted pencil to the
inner rims gives a cool and fresh appearance. The eyes have been finished with layers
of mascara, extended into a 'v' shape to accentuate her beauty. Courtney's cheekbones
have then been dusted with pink, while her lips are coloured with a neutral, pearly
lipstick, creating a shiny, fuller look.

|
|
January Jones
January's look is similar to the make-up used on the catwalks this spring by Christian
Dior and D&G. January has great skin, which provides the ideal palette for striking
lips. The clever use of a semi-matte concealer makes her complexion look flawless,
while a flush of colour to the cheeks gives balance. January's eyebrows are shaped
and filled in to make them look soft, while the eyes are treated to false eyelashes
layered with heavy mascara. There is barely any shade on January's lower eyelid,
allowing the lashes to stand out along with the lips, which are a brave and punchy
red. Once lipstick has been applied, blot with a tissue to take out any shine.

|
|
Zoe Saldana
Zoe's make-up has been designed to allow her flawless, caramel skin to glow, while
also emphasising her striking features. After applying a light-reflecting foundation,
cream blusher containing a natural highlighter has been swept across her defined
cheekbones.
Dark copper has been added to both eyelids, while black eye pencil has been smudged
out on both the upper and lower lashes to create definition. Liquid liner has then
been used to 'flick' the edges. Lashings of thick mascara complete the wide-eyed
look. Reminiscent of the spring catwalks of Celine and Chloe, the look is finished
with a hint of neutral, glossy lip balm.
|
|
|
Jennifer Garner
Jennifer's make-up is a great example of how to wear the spring/summer 2010 minimal
trend beautifully. The trick is to use a foundation that perfectly matches the colour
of your skin and then choose a combination of eyeshadows to bring out your eyes.
The foundation has been set with loose powder, while the eyelids have been swept
with dark brown and nude shades, emphasising Jennifer's brown eyes. A light coral
has then been used both on the cheekbones and her full lips, allowing her features
to stand out. The look is completed with a brown-black shade of mascara and natural
eyebrows.

To copy Courtney's stunning, flawless complexion, first apply RMK Liquid Foundation
in 103 to the face and neck area, then use Laura Mercier Smooth Focus Pressed Powder
in Matte Transluscent to set the foundation and create a base for the rest of the
make-up. Once applied, add Estee Lauder and Michael Kors Blush in Sunset Pink to
the cheeks to create an elegant, subtle tone.
To create the frosty, lilac eye effect, apply Christian Dior 5-colour Eyeshadow
Palette in Pearl Glow (059), followed by a frosted pencil to the inner rims of the
eye.
For neutral and pale-pink lips, apply Clarins Joli Rouge in Pink Blossom to create
fuller lips that reflect the light.

January Jones
|
|
The best way to create January's traditional red-carpet look is to use a good base
such as Givenchy Photo'Perfexion in Perfect Vanilla. Apply Lancome La Touche Pro
Concealer in 02-Light to areas in need of definition.
Define eyebrows using Bobbi Brown Eyebrow Pencil in mahogany.
Curl eyelashes with an appliance before adding lashings of Diorshow Extase Plumping
Mascara in black to give volume.
For knockout red lips, use Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani Lipstick in Rouge 400.
Apply this with a lip brush, before blotting your lips.

|
|
Zoe Saldana
|
|
To emphasise skin tone such as Zoe's, use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Mocha,
spreading evenly. Under the eyes, use Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener in Dark Peach to
give the skin a 'dewy' appearance.
On the cheeks, add Nars' new Gel Orgasm Illuminator, and apply Estee Lauder Gel
Eyeliner in black to the eyes to create definition. Finally, add a dark copper eyeshadow
to the lid and finish with Cargo Lash Activator Mascara in black.
To create Zoe's natural lip colour, apply Dior's Creme de Rose Lip Balm to smooth
and plump, without adding too much colour.

|
Jennifer Garner
|
|
Start by applying Chanel Vitalumiere Foundation to the face, followed by Estee Lauder
and Michael Kors Blush in Sunset Coral to the cheeks.
For the eyes, use Clarins Mono Eyeshadow in 25 and 26 Dusky Rose, before emphasising
the eyebrows in a natural way using a clean brush. Curl lashes as much as possible
using a curling device, then add Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara in black or
brown to hold the curl and add volume.
For vibrant lips, apply Sisley Hydrating Long Lasting Lipstick in L30, remembering
not to blot to keep the look bold and glossy.

Nelly Furtado
Nelly's look is probably the boldest of the four, with her simple, pulled-back hair
further emphasising extremely striking and colourful make-up. While the base make-up
is fairly heavy - with strong, matte lips and extremely bold brows - the eyes have
a soft, platinum shadow across them, adding some light and shimmer to the face.
The lashes are extremely dramatic, almost looking like they could have lash inserts
in them, while the eyebrows - a big feature on the catwalks this season - are dark
and strong, framing those baby blues nicely. Bleached-out eyebrows are the other
popular look of the season.
Start by applying a matte base from MAC to create a sheen palette to work with.
Then line the eyes, including the inner rims, with a black kohl pencil before applying
a neutral creamy shadow to the whole eyelid, taking it up to the brow bone. Use
a Bobbi Brown Beige Linen ShimmerWash eye shadow, then add Bobbi Brown Chrome eye
shadow in silver on the lid, flicking out at the outer corner of the eye. Curl lashes
before building them up with Max Factor Masterpiece Max mascara. Add extra coats
to the outer third of the lashes to create extra thickness and volume. Make brows
look dramatic and heavy with Lancome Crayon Sourcils in 010 Ebene, using lots of
short feather strokes to build up colour.
Finally, use a Shishedo liner to line the lips and fill with Jungle Red lipstick
from NARS. To help achieve that matte look, press a little loose powder on to the
lips through a tissue to absorb excess gloss. Finish the look with blusher on the
apples of the cheeks.

Naomi Campbell
Naomi's look is a perfect example of this season's contouring seen at catwalk shows
such as Chloe. It's all about sculpting and shading to emphasise some features,
while minimising others. You can see the darker shading down the side of the nose,
under the cheek bones and on the outer brow bone, while the lighter, shimmery tone
down the middle of the nose, on the chin and the inner corner of the eyes adds emphasis.
Her eyes are where the majority of the colour is, using an aqua green shadow, while
her cheeks have been given a flush of colour and her lips left neutral. Although
there's a lot of make-up here, the overall effect doesn't look too heavy thanks
to clever application and muted tones.
For skin colour the same as Naomi's, go for a NARS sheer matte foundation in New
Orleans, adapting shades to your skin tone. For the darker shading and contouring,
use Mac Sculpt and Shape Duo; for lighter, use Clarins Instant Light in No 2 Champagne.
Use a NARS blusher in Sin, applying it to the apple of the cheeks and taking it
right up towards the temples. After lining the eyes with a black kohl pencil, apply
Illamasqua Pure Pigment in Conquer, flicking it out slightly at the outer corner
of the eye for added drama. This product is metallic with a high shine so it should
catch the light nicely. Use Mac's lip pencil in Chestnut for definition and add
a little gloss in the centre of the lips for high shine - Armani Lip Shimmer in
Sandy Beige would work well.

Natalie Imbruglia
Natalie has great skin and bone structure, with this make-up enhancing her features
perfectly. Although the eyes are strong and defined, she has left her brow bone
clear, choosing to define the eyebrows instead. Usually, the advice is to go for
either strong eyes or bold lips, but if you wear striking make-up with confidence,
you can get away with both. Natalie's lips are a lovely, bold raspberry colour which
naturally suits her skin tone. If you don't feel you can carry off such strong pigment,
however, try a lighter colour or a coloured gloss instead. While the make-up is
beautifully executed, it still looks like she could have applied it herself.
Use a base such as RMK semi matte base in 104 and apply with a foundation brush
- add a blob to the back of your hand and use the brush to pick up a bit at a time.
Apply to the central panel of the face and blend outwards. Use a dark grey pencil
from Ruby & Millie to line the eyes, smudging underneath with a cotton bud to soften.
Natalie's eyeshadow has varying degrees of grey, so use a palette from Christian
Dior with light to dark shades. Sweep a lighter shade on the lid to create a base
then build up with a darker option, applying it to the eye crease. Apply YSL Everlong
Mascara in black, combing the lashes through between coats. For longer lasting lip
colour, use a little YSL Touch Eclat concealer as a base, then apply YSL Rouge Volupte
Lipstick in Rose Culte straight from the bullet.

|
Charlize Theron
This slightly 1920s look is one of the key trends of the season. Charlize has steered
away from her usual golden tan and gone for a semi-matte base that's pale and interesting.
The brows are neat, well groomed and darkened slightly for definition, while features
are intentionally underplayed so that the mouth can be emphasised and highlighted.
While the lipstick is a beautiful burgundy colour, the eyes have a little soft brown
liner on the upper lids - adding definition without being too harsh - while lashes
have been curled and given a coat of mascara. A touch of soft brown shadow has then
been applied both under the eyes and on the crease of the lid.
For a good base, use Clarins Mousse Instant Smooth foundation in 003 and apply with
a make-up sponge. Define the brows with a brow kit such as Clarins, selecting the
right colour so the brows are darkened slightly but don't look too unnatural. Give
the lashes a squeeze with curlers and add a few coats of Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara.
Use Laura Mercier's Mahogany Brown eye liner, applying it with a fine, pointed eyeliner
brush. If this isn't picking up enough pigment, try damping the brush first. Choose
tawny coloured shadow for the eyes - Christian Dior 5 Couleurs Designer in Amber
Design has perfect colours for this look. Line the lips with a burgundy lip pencil
from L'Oreal or Dior before filling the whole lip. Over the top, apply NARS Fast
Ride lipstick.

Autumn Aspirations

Diane Kruger
This look is a slight nod to the '80s using rich, coppery tones to emphasise and
define. The shadow is blended and applied for a smokey effect, but doesn't appear
heavy. The warm colours are perfect for this season's beautifully-sculpted finish,
as seen at the Alessandro Dell-Acqua fashion show recently. The make-up uses the
contoured technique which builds cheekbones although Diane has naturally defined
cheekbones so needs less work than most. As with Halle Berry's look, the skin tone
is important with the make-up highlighting good, clear, skin. Foundation is applied
only where it's needed and is well blended for a flawless finish. The look has been
seen on the Chloe and Stella McCartney catwalks this autumn.
Use Shu Uemura Nobara Cream Foundation, (from £26) as a base and add rich, coppery
tones to the eyes using Guerlain Ombre Eclat 4 Shades Eyeshadow in 441 Brun Mordore,
(from £33.76). Apply pale, burnished gold across the brows, a copper tone across
the lid and the darkest tone to the outer corner of the eye. For the lashes try
Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined mascara (from £17). Line lips with Chanel's Le Crayon
Levres, (from £15.50) and apply YSL Gloss Volupte, (from £19). Using a sponge, apply
YSL Cream Soft Blush, from (£27) as it has a copper tone.

Halle Berry
Halle's make-up is immaculate and polished, emphasising her flawless complexion.
This look has been popular on the catwalks with models sporting perfect skin that's
not too matte or shiny and free from fake tan. Using the right tools to apply concealer,
foundation and powder is essential here. Halle's look is also monochromatic with
the eyes, lips and cheeks all featuring colours from the same palette, while her
brows are groomed and lashes are clearly defined, but not too heavy. There's also
a clever use of eyeliner, applied just above the upper lash line and on the inner
rim of the eye on the lower lashes. The overall look is very natural and fresh and
works well with Halle's skin tone and colouring.
Begin with concealer to disguise blemishes and uneven skin tone - try Bobbi Brown's
Creamy Concealer, (from £16). Apply Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation, (from £27.50) with
a brush making sure you blend it in really well. Darken your brows by one shade
with Laura Mercier Brow Powder, (from £20). Lancome's Ink Artliner in black carbon
ink, (from £19) gives eyes a strong look while Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara in
black, (from £19.50) is perfect for lashes. Use a finger to stain lips with Estee
Lauder's Limited Edition Signature Lipstick in Terracotta No56, (from £16) topped
off with Estee Lauder Rose Gold gloss (from £14) in the centre of the upper and
lower lips.

Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten is wearing one of the strongest looks of the season — heavy, dark, defined
eyes that are winged out with lots of eyeliner, colour and mascara. This was highlighted
at the Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs shows and indicates that eyes are a focal point
this autumn - a bit of smudgy eyeliner won't cut it anymore. It's up to the indiviudal
how bold they want to go, and whether the look is being adapted for the day or for
night. Models on the catwalk had bleached brows, but, for a softer, more accessible
look, Kirsten's have been left natural. The undone, fair brows are a nod to the
catwalks but much more appropriate for the red carpet. As the eyes are so strong
in this look, the rest of the make up is played down.
Dior JazzClub Total Eyelook Makeup Clutch, (from £44) has everything you need to
make up the eyes. Keep the liner close to the lashes in a thick solid line. If you
don't feel confident in creating the whole line in one go, work from the middle
outwards and then the middle inwards to make it easier. The liner should look graphic
and strong, while the shadow should be used to define and contour the eyes, winged
out at the socket with dark shadow on the top and bottom. Then apply Clinique Vitamin
C Lip Smoothie in Nude Nutritious No 2, (from £13.50) and Bobbi Brown Sheer Colour
Cheek Tint in Sheer Coral, (from £16) with the fingers.

Liv Tyler
This striking look - seen at the Prada and Gucci shows recently - breaks all the
rules: it's not just about the eyes or the lips having colour, but the entire face.
The make-up is flamboyant, bold and inspiring, but beware – it isn't easy to achive
or carry off. The trick is to keep the skin light and not too matt or heavily made
up, allowing features to appear balanced and not overdone. Although there is a lot
of colour on the eyes, lips and cheeks here, the overall look is underpinned by
great, natural skin that's free from thick, heavy foundation and lots of powder.
The finished result is a look that is strong and carefree and needs to be carried
off with confidence, as Liv does expertly, of course.
Achieve a natural base using Givenchy Photo'Perfexion in Perfect Vanilla, (from
£25.45) and apply with a damp sponge for light coverage. For the eyes try Givenchy
Prismissime Eyes 9 Colors Eyeshadow in No 59, Poetiques Blues, (from £32.79). Begin
with a sheeny pale blue on the inner corner of the eye, across the brow bone and
on the lid and then the darker tones to define and shape the eye, including underneath.
Apply a dusky purple to the outer corners and a couple of coats of Guerlain Le Two-Brush
Mascara 51 Nuit 2 Boheme, (from £21.53). Brush cheeks with Estee Lauder's Limited
Edition Gilded Rose Marbelized Shimmer Power, (from £26) and for red lips use Rouge
Dior Creme de Gloss in Fig Nectar (£17.50).
